The T-56 was the 6 speed manual tranny for 4th gen V8's. I've heard good things about it and many people use the T-56 when putting a manual tranny in a 3rd gen, either to replace an automatic or when swaping engines with an LT1/LS1. I believe the T5 was considered to be weak in stock form and didn't live long behind engines with over 400 horse power or 400 foot pounds of torque.
But, like you said, I don't know if it goes 'right in' or if it requires a little hammering and cutting to make it fit.
The reason for my question to Greg was to clear up any confusion, either mine or 1979ZZ4Camaro's.
